A spectacle favorite for many seasons, Parisian eyewear line Face a Face has built their reputation on stunning colours and vibrant shapes. February is a big month for the fellow behind many of these designs as Eyestylist, the Fine Eyewear Design Review has selected Face a Face designer, Pascal Jaulent as their influential designer of the month!

In his interview, Pascal explains some of the design ideals behind the handmade line:

The basic principle of Face à Face has always been architecture, and now we also combine fashion with shapes and colours – it is very artful. When designing frames, it is important to pay attention to design, but also fashion trends. Frames are a personal object or accessory that has to be connected to fashion trends.

There are many more collections now than a few years ago. Frames are a personal expression, and the attention that people are paying to frames is a growing, positive trend. I want customers to say ‘this is beautiful, and my eyes smile’. I like to make people look beautiful in their glasses.

Spectacle Presents Yellow Plus at Lawrence Park!

In his recent travels around the world, on the hunt for new and exciting collections to share with our clients, Spectacle founder and owner Jag Dhillon has come across quite an elegant collection hailing from a town north of Kyoto, Japan.

Also available in half matte black, half polished silver finish.

The frames are constructed fromtitanium, featuring acetate temple tips. The colour palette of the lineconsists of matte finished fronts in earth tones, Browns, Blacks, Olive, Violetand and Red. Each features a painted front with a polished, brushedfinish in chrome or gold on the inner surfaces.

All design and construction of thecollection is done in Japan where Yellow Plus emphasis the importance of havingcontrol of every element of the process.

"It’s our policy to coordinate the mostreliable engineers in each field of component parts and processes and havecareful arrangements over and to make confirmation on each production process. We can control the slightest movements of lines in this way It is quiteimportant for our production to make these kinds of confirmations."

Yellow Plus aims to produce stylesthat, although may be in line with current trends depending on year to year, are intended to be styles that don’t date themselves to a particular season.

"We think the styles should be given thefirst priority. Therefore we don’t stick too much to thefashion of short life but we pursue the styles, which are appreciated to bebeautiful constantly by users over the long period."

Oliver Peoples Presents The Soloist Collection

Spectacle is proud to announce another unique collaboration now available at our Queen West Boutique...

The Soloist is a collaboration series with emerging fashion label TAKAHIROMIYASHITA TheSoloIst., by Japanese designer Takahiro Miyashita. Previously known for creating the edgy cult menswear brand Number (N)ine, Miyashita is praised in the men’s fashion world as a true visionary.

"The Round" is the distinctive double bridge frame of The Soloist Collection.

As a fan of Oliver Peoples, he was inspired by the understated styling and attention to detail for which the brand is known.

TheSoloIst. frames were constructed under a “salvage” philosophy. It was important to Miyashita that nothing new was produced unnecessarily, and that when possible, stock parts from vintage eyewear be incorporated into the design. Old factories and warehouses were scoured for original pieces and turned out to be goldmines.

When original parts could not be located, a year was spent replicating classical techniques with the original tooling used for Oliver Peoples frames close to 25 years ago. Finally the designs were infused with Miyashita’s original style and the combined parts were successfully reborn as luxury eyewear. The finished product is a masterpiece of old and new – vintage and vintage inspired.

"The Teardrop" is the Sunglass counterpart of the Soloist Collection.

"The Teardrop" continues the brushed, aged gold and silver look.

Also available in Matte Black, "The Teardrop comeswith Polarized and high-transmission lenses.

The rarity of the vintage parts makes these precious pieces a true collector’s item.
Miyashita explains, “This collaboration is going to be a new standard. I am very honored and grateful for the result.”

New and Awesome Barton Perreira Videos

The amazing creative team at Barton Perreira have come up with some amazingly creative videos recently and the team at Spectacle is head over heels for them.

Part 1 of the video series features Giovanni Ribisi introducing his "Ribisi" frame that he designed with designer Patty Perreira. The video takes place in an ideal creative setting inside container world. Surrounded by the things that inspire Giovanni's design, his 56 100 BN2 Austin Healey and Triumph motorcycle. Very cool stuff.

The Home Plate. - Complete w piano varnish temples and a metal front this combination frame is sure to be a home run with who ever wears it.

The Beast III - The Beast is the king of the Chrome Hearts jungle, the 3rd generation of this design carries over the awesome features from the first two. A curved frame front accented by temples featuring Chrome Hearts motif on both the front and back make sure people know that these are the big frames on campus.

The Hag. Another from the amazing CH aviator collection, this one is a little more squared out with daggers on the side making them sick, twisted and bad to know!

"The Round" part of the Soloist Collection.

The pieces in the Vintage Collection are recreated using the same meticulous processes and attention to detail that has made Oliver Peoples a leader in the industry.

The MP-2, one of the earliest designs from the company's inception.

Each frame captures the spirit of the original collection and closely resemble the roots of Oliver Peoples 1920's - 1930's Americana, post-industrial revolution aesthetic.

Spectacle and Chloe, Together again!

Actress/Model/Mogul Chloe Sevigney has struck again in collaboration with Barton Perreira and retail empire Opening Ceremony.

Last year Spectacle was proud to unveil the debut collection between these three and this year we are even more excited about their designs.

We are loving the exposed lenses on the Jinx and Kevin models pictured above and the mirrored lenses on the Mark pictured below.

Last years collection was inspired by and named after Andy Warhol's muse Candy Darling.

Not much info is known on the story behind the names of these frames , we do know we are the only store around stocking these right now so stick close to this blog and our @spectaclelovesu twitter feed and we will let you know what we know when we know it, ya know

New Thierry Lasry Hitting Queen St This Week

Since we fell so hard last year for the wonderful designs of Mr Thierry Lasry we recently decided to renew our romance once again. Above you will see Shervonne the newest edition to our Spectacle family showing off some of the hot new arrivals from the T.L. 2012 Collection

Building on the strong showing from last year, this season Mr Lasry has sought out some vintage acetates to produce his designs with. That means not only are his 2012 shapes totally cool in that "future vintage" way that his 2011's were, but they are also made from materials you wont find anywhere else, unless you have a time machine.

It seems without even knowing it we have been fans of Graz's work for a while since he was the driving force behind Australian shades juggernaut Ksubi.

With his signature collection Graz has taken inspiration from the "beauty that presents itself every single second in every single thing"

The Joel pictured below is good example of this philosophy, it is stunning in its simplicity and beautifully bold with out being over the top.

Fresh off their recent award-winning appearance at the Silmo Optical Show, I.C. Berlin is riding high with a few new surprises and you can bet Spectacle has got em!

Famous for their light-weight stainless steel construction, each frame is laser cut and assembled without any bolts or solder points. And some of their latest specs have taken that laser cutting even further with unique patterns now etched right onto the steel frames.

The design house from Belgium is well known for the original concepts and unique shapes of its eyewear. Something we can appreciate for sure.

Beautiful Buffalo Horn Frames at Spectacle

Mosley Tribes Brings the Love this Fall

The best thing about this time of year is that you can't take a step outside without getting an eyeful of the vibrant colours that come with the changing of the seasons. And what better inspiration for some fall sunglass colours than some of our favorite aviator shapes by Mosley Tribes!

The "Dunn" just hangin' out this fall.

We're all created a little differently so it's always nice to see a line of frames, especially aviators, that offer more than one generic shape. Mosley Tribes has one of the most diverse collections of shapes and colours, offering some of the best aviators available.

Our next challenge was to make magic happen again, luckily for Johnny making magic is what we at Spectacle specialize in.

Fritz is one crazy and cool cat. Besides fronting his own international super group Fritz Helder and the Phantoms he also lends his vocal talents to Azari & III one of the hottest dance acts on the planet.

Fritz came by our 752 Queen St W flagship last week to grab a sexy set of specs before heading of on a little fall tour of Asia, including Shang-Hi and Hong Kong.

Street artist D3N!@L got our attention at this years Distillery Art Show for sure and not just because his tent was right across from our building B53 shop, his art is large in both size and presence. Using mixed media materials and an old school graffiti influence D3N!@L makes pieces that make you think and feel classy at the same time, after all that is what art is all about right??

Spectacle Loves the Distillery Art Show

Spectacle had a chance to check out the Distillery District Arts Show this weekend as it was going on in one of our own back yards.

We saw a ton of cool art/artists and decided to do a little profile on some of our favs, first up is Paul Elia.

Paul is an OCAD graduate, who's panoramic shots of Queen St W in Toronto (home of our flagship boutique) and of Hamilton AKA The Steel City really captured our eye.

HAMILTON STRIP depicts distinct and interesting Hamilton cityscapes. Entire city blocks (or strips) are recreated in heavy tones of black, white and gray. Focusing on downtown and central Hamilton neighbourhoods, these drawings are meant to highlight the surreal contrast between the imposing industrial shells from a manufacturing history vs. the residential development around it.

The large panoramic prints are 8ft. long, allowing the viewer to literally walk down the block. The Hamilton Strip series has been evolving to include some muted colours and feature more cities in the Ontario “rustbelt” such as Windsor, Sarnia, Brantford, Toronto and Oshawa. All of these cities face similar challenges as they cope with contemporary industrial / manufacturing realities.

We noticed a bunch of companies putting out round and roundish sunglass frames in their Spring/Summer 2011 collections. Being the astute stylists that we are we can safely say that more of these are on the way for the Fall/Winter season.

Keeping that in mind we decided to highlight some of our favourite circular sunnies to make it easy for our clients to see the cream of the crop.

Here are our picks

G.L.C.O.-Hampton. New guy on the scene Garret Leight, hit a home run with his debut optical/sun collection. All the looks are inspired by the beaches and lifestyle around his Venice Beach home. The Hampton (named after one of the more famous left coast beaches) is our choice as his best design.

Paul Smith-Elson. This frame combines an acetate front with smooth metal temples and photochromic (that means they get darker when you go outside) lenses to give the wearer a frame that can be worn both in and outdoors a double threat so to speak.

Raf Simmons for Linda Farrow - RAF21. A collaborative effort between Mr Simmons and Mrs Farrow, this is a match made in heaven. It is both very current in the fashion sense and very classical in its design. We think it also looks super hot on both guys and gals.

Cutler and Gross -0736. One of the originators of geek chic, C&G have been doing what they do and doing it well for over 40 years. If these frames evoke a certain retro feeling it is not by accident my friends. Cutler and Gross were there from the beginning.

Anne Et Valentin -Freedom. This beautifully crafted frame combines both acetate and metal materials yet is still light weight with very strong defining features. Available in many color combination's this design feels more like art for your face then your average frame does.

Dan Levy is man of many talents, writer, VJ, host and all around heck of a guy.

Mr Levy is also a man of many glasses, most of which you can see on him during his various media appearance. One pair in particular is near and dear to us and that is the Cutler and Gross 0772 in GB. Think of Garret Leight and his Venice Beach California inspired spectacles or Ic! Berlin and their sleek sheet metal frames with modern screw-less hinge that is oh so German in its construction.

The fine folks at Orgreen Denmark have taken this idea to the next level with the release of their Skyline Series.

For this totally unique collection of both eye and sunglasses they have cut out the outline of the city of Copenhagen on the temples, check it out............

Action Man Now With Mini Mistinguett Sunglasses and Kung Fu Grip

Oliver Goldsmith's skilled sunglasses design team has really out done themselves this time.

As part of a charity auction for Help for Hero's as organized by Men's Health Magazine they have created a pair of mini mistinguetts shades to outfit a doll resembling "Action Man" the star of the first Men's Health movie. Check out the video above to watch the creation of this super styling little guy.

The mistinguettes look great in full size as well as seen on Mr Fredwreck the director of Snoop Dogg's latest video. Check him out in a doggumentary interview below.

The fine folks at Ic! Berlin have been jokingly calling themselves "sheet metal salesmen" for the last few years now and all kidding aside they are totally right in their self description.

Take a look at the following video as IC!B founder and head honcho Raplh Anderl explains the process of manufacturing his revolutionary indestructible frames.

Not being one to rest on his laurels Ralph and his team of German engineers have taken this process and evolved it.

The result is frames with the appearance of hounds tooth and herringbone. One of the first models to get this treatment was the Urban a collaborative design with Alain Mikli's son Jeremy. See results below

Not much is known of the mystery man who calls himself Armand Zentil.

Every once in a while he will jet to Toronto from NYC and back again sometimes acquiring a new sailor tat and sometimes adding to his fantastic personal sunglasses portfolio.

Since sailor tattoos and kick ass shades are two things we at Spectacle also can get behind it only seems right and natural that Armand comes to us when he is in the big smoke.

Last time he was in picking up a few things he busted out his limited edition Mosley Tribes Beaded Lyndell a modern classic he got on one of his excursions
